Vanilla Thoughts

For those general conversations... I'd like to say politics and current affairs, but that's not quite my cup of tea - think more along the lines of those every day thoughts that need a home.

#SorryNotSorry

#SorryNotSorry

Amy Schumer might have brought this hashtag into the limelight recently, and incidentally I have found myself encountering so many moments where it is applicable. I don't know if it's a post-partum thing or my general disposition which prompts me to provide unwarranted apologies all over the show.

Maybe it's time we stop worrying about what other people think so much and say #SorryNotSorry.

The P Word

Christmas is a time of festivities, family, and fun, and it is also a time of procrastination as our days and weekends in the lead up to December 25th, fill up with office parties, get-togethers and lunch dates. These jam packed itineraries offer easy excuses for not cleaning the car, for not attending those seven pump classes you signed up for, and excuses for not writing a single sentence beyond the 1000 words written for your second book back in October, when you had the pipe dream of 'finishing by Christmas'.

Femme Fatale - Jessica Alba

Femme Fatale - Jessica Alba

She's beautiful, down-to-earth, and seemingly has it all with a successful acting career, her own natural product company, hot hubby and two adorable children. She's Jessica Alba, and she's also my number one girl crush.

Normally when people tick so many boxes, we look upon them with resentment but with Jess (can I call her that?) it's hard to feel anything but admiration as she seems to radiate niceness! She quite possibly could be the very definition of the Femme Fatale.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

...Who's the vainest of them all? That might be a bit of a stretch as mirrors certainly still play a functional role in society (at times!), but with new technology, and an abundance of apps and gadgets, there seems to be a new focus on sharing our reflections.

And with the dawning of what has become the age of the 'selfie', one can't help but question whether we're creating art, a bit of fun, or personal propaganda.

The Banana Story

The Banana Story

Deprivation. It's not a new idea that when we deprive ourselves of something, it tends to make us desire it even more so. To the point where you normally reach breaking point and end up bingeing on an entire tub of Ben and Jerry's.

But we're not just talking food... we deprive ourselves of many things in life. And it almost seems that the moment we deny ourselves is the exact moment our craving peaks. Is there a correlation here? Are deprivation and desire inextricably linked?

Skeletons in the Closet

Skeletons in the Closet

We've all seen circumstances of private items getting thrust into the public eye, whether it's the latest celebrity sex tape, stories of teenage misdemeanour, or even just that ghastly high school year book picture that still torments you when you see it.

Often we can laugh these moments off, others may play havoc with our emotions, and then sometimes, these exposés can go so far as to affect our careers. But is it fair for an employer to go looking for your Skeletons in the Closet?

Femme Fatale - Jennifer Lawrence

Femme Fatale - Jennifer Lawrence

I've been pretty open about my girl crush on Jennifer Lawrence since I first saw her in The Hunger Games, and perhaps I'm in post-coital glow having been to see American Hustle recently, but when I decided to do a new segment on Femme Fatale, a la celebrating fabulously fierce women in the world, its creation was synonymous with the selection of Jennifer as the first to feature.

Why? Well it could have something to do with her being one of the most down to earth, bona fide Hollywood blockbuster babes around... and all at the ripe old age of 23!

Fashvolution - Couples Style

Fashvolution - Couples Style

Evolution. What is it? Is it merely adapting to one's surroundings? Changing to better fit in with the environment you inhabit? If this is the case, then what do we mean by fashion evolution... Fashvolution? Does this begin to explain why, as we become more comfortable in our relationship, we morph and change based on stimulants from our partners... Get your mind out of the gutter! I mean fashion stimulants!

Where am I going with this? Well we have seen the trend in Hollywood - "couples style", so does this then apply to our own individual Fashvolution?

Walking the Tightrope - Pushover or Polite

Walking the Tightrope - Pushover or Polite

What is the difference between being considerate and caring too much? I ask this question as not too long ago when we were on the flight back to New Zealand, I was sitting with my seat-back upright, acutely aware of the passenger behind me and worrying desperately that if I were to recline back at all it would be disruptive, but not just disruptive, it would be rude. This lasted almost the entire duration of the flight, despite the fact the person in front of me had their seat reclined back in my face from almost the second we took off.

So where do we draw the line... walking the tightrope of being a pushover and being polite.

Work to Live or Live to Work

Work to Live or Live to Work

I'm sure practically all of you out there will have heard of the phrase 'Work to live or Live to work' before and taken a brief moment to contemplate the meaning.

Well, me being the over analytical (and not in a calculative, numbers or business type way), constantly searching for a greater depth to something which is probably intended to be one dimensional , person that I am, have recently begun to think about this phrase a wee bit more...

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween

The spooky season is almost upon us and as it draws oh so close, I thought it appropriate to do a Halloween post, namely so I could share these adorable Fanged Pumpkins that I happen to see on... *cough cough* The Martha Stewart Show - Hey, I was unemployed at the time, Martha at least provided some slightly educational TV time, albeit a slight domesticity angle.

And as I thought about a Halloween blog, I thought you know what, let's not do the whole 'commercial exploitation' thing, because Halloween is quite simply fun!

Blast from the Past - Playground Pastimes

The other day I was strolling down the main street of Wellington, and I came across a busker, right outside the supermarket. Now this in itself is obviously not worthy of commentary, but what I did find notable was his busking medium of choice...

It wasn't a guitar like the young guy singing a droning version of Stuck In The Middle, nor was it a fiddle accompanied by a Chinese man who looks like the guy selling takeaways in The Fifth Element, and it definitely wasn't a small-sized keyboard like the girl who has her dog sitting patiently next to her. This chap was busking with... Chatter Rings.

Tights As Pants - The TAP Phenomenon

As we dwindlers of the southern hemisphere approach the end of winter, or for us living in more... shall we say, robust? destinations, are nearing the middle of winter, I wanted to take a moment to address a much discussed and scrutinised topic of the fashion community... tights, or more specifically tights as pants.

Yep that's right, it's popped up as often as a new addition to the Jolie-Pitt clan, so with everyone else expressing an opinion on whether or not this fashion... trend(?) is appropriate, and if it is, what the rules are, I thought it was time I got in my two cents.

The 'F' Word

The 'F' Word

After a long period of time hunting for work in Melbourne, My husband and I have made the decision and are making the move back to our previous hometown, Wellington, New Zealand.

What was perhaps most interesting however, was when we both acknowledged it as the 'right' decision, at the same time, there was a sense of sadness about the whole thing, because we had essentially made a commitment of sorts to stay in Melbourne post-wedding, and to now be up and leaving, leaves us with a feeling of defeat, like somehow, we are almost giving up. We have failed.

Current Crazes and Crystal Gazes - The Post-Apocalypse, Futuristic Sci-Fi

Following in a similar theme from the last Current Crazes and Crystal gazes on Vampires and Zombies, this edition is also about what's trending on our screens; The Post-Apocalypse, Futuristic Sci-Fi. Though these genres have been around a long time, it seems more recently they have popped up and multiplied as quickly as a wet Gremlin.

So what is it that's making these genres have a surge in popularity when they have been around for like... ever! And what will be the new flavour of the month when the trends disappear back into oblivion.
